Coffe Conundrums (2014), is a project I developped during a residency at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop in August 2014, just before the referndum to decide whether or not Scotland should remain part of the UK or not took place.

In those days politics were central to the life of people living in the UK and discussions took place on a daily basis. The work takes inpiration from a card game, found at the Sculpture Workshop, called Coffe Conundrums. The game consists in a series of cards carrying provocative political, social or cultural statements, that aim to ignite discussions between the players.

I picked the seven cards carrying the strongest and most controversial political messages and wrote them on the billboard outside the Sculpture Centre, on the main road of the town. I changed the sentence every hour for seven hours. During the installation I was approached and had conversation with various passers-by, who asked what  I was doing, why and if I agreed with the messages on the billboard.

 

Coffee Conundrums è un lavoro sviluppato durante una residenza in Scozia presso il Scottish Sculpture Workshop (SSW) avvenuta nel 2014, nel periodo subito precedente il referendum per decidere l’indipendenza o meno della Scozia.

Il lavoro prende il nome da un gioco da tavolo trovato presso il centro, chiamato Coffe Conundrums. Il gioco è composto da un mazzo di carte su cui sono riportate una serie di affermazioni di natura sociale, politica o economica mirate ad accendere un acceso scambio di opinioni tra i giocatori.

Considerando il clima di fermento riguardo al referendum ho deciso di utilizzare le 7 frasi di natura politica trovate sulle carte e riproporle sul muro esterno del centro, che affaccia sulla via principale del paese e viene solitamente utilizzata per comunicare appuntamenti o eventi. L’operazione ha suscitato curiosità e interesse nei passanti, e ha favorito il nascere di discussioni e confronti.
